the day I took out books at the library

wed nes day

I woke up in the middle of a dream where lyra belaqua, harry potter and an elephant were running away and had to jump through the window into the next world and a creature resembling Pan that singing half goat man was chasing us.

I really didnt want to get out of bed because it was 25 degrees out and my widget predicted snow. but i bundled up in multiple layers and made it to ed. psych on time.

it was an interesting class I learned about Dysthymic depression. It is a type of disorder whre the person is pretty functional but it lasts over several years and affects their thought processes and makes them negative and they have self esteem issues and it can be treated by psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. i imagine its harder to diagnose that there is an actual problem because the person might just be viewed as pessimistic when in fact their mind is still affected chemically.

i went to the career center in palladium and was so mad bc i need my actual social security card or passport they wont take a copy and i just wana start workinggg
I was in a really bad mood but then i saw this homeless guy holding a puppy and pet it and felt better, so i went and got it some fancy puppy food from whole foods, and some cookies for the guy, he was pretty young like in his 20s. they found the puppy and its so cute. some guy walked by and told him to give it away but i understand why he doesnt want to, its his baby now ya know? and if ure sleeping alone on the street ( he said he had a warm place though which is good) i would want a canine companion i mean-didnt you see I am Legend?

then i had group dynamics, and my group talked today and apparently i am still the leader but i compete with this lady mari, i like her she seems relaly interesting she is older and has experienced a lot but she doesnt like authority. she must be of northern european descent I think shes the only natural blond I've seen in a longgg time,
I still think some of the anaylsis is a little far fetched but, at least my group talked today, except this one girl but i think shes shy.

then group dynamics was sort of a review of things we've learned before, too bad because usually its entertaining.

then went to the library and got some books out on domestic violence-my social work paper topic. im too sleepy to get much done now but my goal is to churn it out tomorrow!

Tuesday

I did training for the child study center. we got to observe the bosses son doing the exercises and turns out hes like a baby genious! hes 4 and was talking to us about physics-he actually said the words "momentum and gravity" haha impressive, but unfortunately it took like 30 minutes longer because the ceiling is 4/6 wrong and he kept getting them all right!

then we hiked up to harlem again to do a real interview But the madre again didnt want to stay for 2 hours. she came in with 4 little kids, 2 must have been twins of around age 2 and she didnt want to leave them there for that long, understandable but frustrating for research. another mom didnt want to be videotaped because she was afraid she'd end up on tv. oh well, had another good convo with the researchers, the one who studies school psychology is really interesting.

then i took the crosstown bus and hung out at Borders books until hindi class. Really interesting learned about borderline personality disorder and it explains a lot about some people I have interacted with, characterized by extremes in mood, idolization and then demonization of the same person, its a defense mechanism often caused by a neglected and traumatic childhood. BPD people often are aggressive and accusatory because they have a fear of being rejected.

had hindi class, going frustratingly slowly, i need to bust my ass and listen to the dvds and study extra hard. hasnt really hit me that im going to india yet though.

also passed a ginormous Rat, lol a blow-up one becuase people were protesting un-unionized labor. and walked the wrong way 3 blocks in the freezing cold.
came home and stayed up too late making fried rice.

presidents day

So it was 65 degrees today!
kind of rainy but, jared and I walked around without jackets! we sat in washington square park with kevin for a bit, talking about how we really dont know anyone and how its hard to make friends except in classes becuase, theres no central campus or place where everyone hangs out, and the cultural clubs dont seem to have regular meetings.
also we're all single and they are newly so so we want to meet people! haha
it started to rain though so we went to cosi (ive gone there probly 10 times im obsesed with their tomato basil mozzarella sandwhiches with good bread and balsamic vinagarette, and because i have their card so at some point i should get a free sandwhich! still waiting...)

then i am proud of myself i went Swimming. its open all day for laps. i used to swim in high school for exercise but at tufts the pool is like a fish pond so i havent done it in awhile. Very good exercise though, but you have to remember to drink water because its harder to tell when you are dehydrated. I swam 16 laps, and watched the divers doing sweet flips int he diving pool.
the only thing was you have to wear a swim cap and goggles (well if you dont want to crash into the wall) and my swim cap is so Tight it was giving me a headache, and the goggles are tinted dark blue so its hard to see out of.
but then i was waiting for the shower and i saw someone go into a random door and i realized it was a Sauna. so i went and sat in there and it was HEaven! omg in the middle of winter to be sitting in an amazingly warm little room is definitely going to become a regular activity. even just for 5 minutes it was great! the only awkward drawback is the abundance of naked people in the locker rooms and sauna. but i just closed my eyes and pretended i was in the tropics, it was nice.

then i went and studied at starbucks and got a lot of reading done. though i realized i really do not actually have very much work! i read about a chapter a week and a lot of the theory so far I've studied before. and i dont have tests or quizzes, only journals for one class and midterm and final papers for the others! i should do some more hindi though, and practice for my internship training.

then i went to see cindy at work at her restaurant-fancy japenese place-and then went to blockbuster to get this movie she recommended-called Gummo? but they didnt have it so i decided to buy a movie so i wouldnt have to worry about returning it, and im expanding my movie collection to include some non-G rated films, so i picked out 2 movies, one was 15 one was 10, but when i got to the counter they had 3 for 20! so i got to get 3 for less than the price i was originally going to pay!

i was proud of myself for walking the 16 blocks to the video store and home so i treated myself to some thai food but it was disappointing :( but hte thai tea was good, im going to get the powder from chinatown so i can make it myself.

now im going to go decorate my room some more and maybe watch one of the movies-my roomates are watching indiana jones but im not in the mood, even though i havent seen it since i was 7 and walked in and saw the faces melting off and was terrified. lol

adios

rainy sunday evening

I love that the weekend isnt over.
friday went to the education conference at yale, it was interesting. its held by the school of management so its kind of a different approach to have all these business students analyzing kids like products in the market but-they had some valid points, about using computers in place of teachers when there are budget cuts. and the endless search for good teachers to work in a market where they arent paid well. apparently in new orleans in 10 years? maybe less, one in 3 students will be taught by a teach for america teacher there.

then i hopped on the metronorth back with my family friend, and talked about india, im excited for the summer.

went out with my firend laura from NYU it was fun except wearing high heels in winter with a bad foot is not a great idea.

saturday i woke up to cindy called me multiple times and we hopped on a bus with 2 tables and rode from 21 on the east side to 174 on the west side ,took over an hour, then we marched to the hardware store with a power drill in hand, and asked the guy to help us get everything else we needed to put a shelf up in her room. haha the guy clearly didnt think our skills were that great in drilling and such.

then went shopping a bit in union square. i love when you're going to buy something for the given price and when you get to the cashier its actually cheaper!
hopped on my first NYU trolley and got a free ride to my door, very nice driver. theyre really strict though this lady got on and said she was an alumni from the social work school and they really would not let her on without NYU ID. i mean umderstanable but also who would wait for 10 minutes arguing if they were lying.

alex came over and we got indian food and watched part of mean girls. amd then we went with laura and cindy to this crazy warehouse party in brooklyn called rubulad and it was great. felt like you were in Across the Universe. its a warehouse decorated by artists and people come in costume s and people of all ages. its fun! quite an experience.

now im watching lord of the rings!

From Home in CT

So
estoy en mi casa in new haven, went to dinner w my family and family friend, it was nice, but im such a cheap date, i dont like fancy food that much, i mean vegetables are vegetables, i guess you could have truffels compared to a steak but, really just give me some mozzarella tomato and basil and im happy

anyway so i hope you all had a lovely valentines day. i got flowers for my parents and was carrying them around like someone gave them to me. haha, got lots of cute smiles. I saw 12 men and 4 women carrying flowers in grand central, it was cute. and at the train station in new haven a random guy wished me and my family friend a happy valentines day. are there other cultures/countries that have a day to celebrate love? i think its a great idea. unfortunately the commercialization of it in the US has made it too focused on Romantic love. ya know? like your loveR or boyfriend or husband is who you should share it with, as opposed to like, yo i love my friends and im going to buy them flowers.

i want to go exercise but i hurt my foot on the treadmill last week. listening to Alex i was trying to run straighter I guess? like not cross my feet in front of each other, and my left foot started hurting and i sort of ignored it-my bad-and when i got off it didnt stop and i proceeded to limp around nyc for a few days-a feat not easily done especially in rain or snow. so now it only hurts if i walk down stairs or on unflat ground.
ok well i gota sleep im going to an education conference at yale tomorrow!
gnite!

Happy Valentines Day!!

So I'm going to just keep this blog to write random things I'm thinking or doing here in nyc. I know its not as exotic a location as most of my friends but, its still interesting. and I kept a journal all through high school and I think it was therapeutic so, I'm getting back into it.

Here are some quotes to celebrate the day!

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.-jimi hendrix

Ingrid Bergman:

A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.

and of course by one of my favorites- Pablo Neruda, just an excerpt I liked
Me miran con tus ojos las estrellas más grandes.
Y, como yo te amo, los pinos en el viento
Quieren cantar tu nombre con sus hojas de alambre.

so anyway in psychology today we were learning about the brain, and the limbic system controls emotions, anger pleasure etc, and there is a part of your brain which learns rewards. but what is the psychology or science of love? is there a chemical for that? it encompasses all emotions. is it an addiction? is it real? if anger and happiness are real, isnt love more real than anything? well anyone who has a scientific opinion, let me know

what else was I thinking today
I watched The Descent, a -scary-movie, basically, if you ever go spelunking, go to a cave which other people have survived, and bring a flask and a shotgun, just in case. oh and when you run up to someone with an ax in their hand, call out before you're right behind them. eck.

and then we watched Splash (my roomies are film students), about tom hanks and a mermaid.

I had a busy week of training for my internship at the nyu child study center. Its really interesting its evaluating the cultural parenting practices of dominican and mexican mothers and how it affects their preschoolers academically and socioemotioally.i get to test preschoolers, aka play with them and keep data. shoudl be interesting, and i like the people working on the project. one is a school psychologist, which im interested in.

and my group dynamics class is interesting but I think the teacher and some of the theory is complete BS. my expressive face might get me into trouble...lol

and in my social work class, an attorney in family law came in and spoke. its cool my teacher is great. Hes such a nice guy, and he is a working social worker so its cool he genuinely wants us to learn and brings people in so we can ask experts. its a good opportunity.

I ask a lot of questions this semester. Maybe i'm that annoying girl but, when the material is interesting I dont get how people can just sit there and not think about it. or not ask questions or discuss it. i mean isnt that what school is for. otherwise we would all just sit at home and read to ourselves.

but ok bedtime
hope u have a great valentines day!
Im a little lonely of course but, for the most part I genuinely like seeing other people in love, so hopefully I will see some cute things tomorrow. gnite :)
